Lingua Franca, in your shoes

We recently read/discussed Lingua Franca and the many cultural, physical, and economical effects of the Earthers arriving. The implants are obviously a very touchy subject for the denizens of this alien planet. A few of us were very opposed to the pressure (albeit unforced) that these implants brought on the aliens.

I have a simple question, that i think relates well to our discussons in class and might give you a new perspective on the subject. Let's say a galactic organization of aliens came to our planet, and they communicated through telepathy. In order to be a part of this, we must be able to understand and speak this new language (get implants). How would you react to this? Would you oppose? Would you get the implants?

  1. I would consider getting the implants, if only they put forth a proportional effort to communicate with humans, and as long as their mode of communication does not supplant mine. It's all about preserving culture, and especially as people of a foreign land, they would have to be at least somewhat accommodating to the customs of this land. However, I would not object to anyone getting the implants as long as they do not try to assimilate to the alien presence. I would only receive the implants if it were absolutely necessary.

  2. I believe I would get the implants. By getting the implants, I would be able to communicate with an entirely new set of people/aliens, broaden my outlook on life and create new opportunities for myself. In my opinion, I see the implants equivalent to learning a foreign language. If you had the opportunity of learning a new language so that you can communicate with other people, would you not do it?
As far as our culture changing, I think that culture has always been influenced by human advancement and in this case, it would have to accommodate the implants.

  3. I would consider the implants. I would have to way the costs if i got the implants, would i be giving up anything or do they have side effects. I would probably get them though because if aliens were coming to our planet I would want to be able to communicate and hear what they are saying. I agree with corey also, the human race culture is influenced by technology advacement. I would not object to others getting the implant also.

  4. I wouldn't be the first in line for implants. I would have to wait for a little bit to see how other people get along with them and if there was anything wrong with them. If aliens were coming to our planet they would need to try and learn our langauge too. Or build implants themselves to communicate with us. I think it should be give and take. We need to try and understand them a little bit and they need to try and understand us.
