Morales in taking life

Today in class we discussed the morales of bringing back life to the dead. We talked of how it was wrong or right and most said that there wasn't wrong with it and some said it might affect their views of religion. Now what about the morales of taking away life. In today's society there is abortion, assisted suicide, and the ability to "pull the plug" on people. I realize this is a sensitive subject, but I just thought it would be interesting to talk about the other side of the "playing God" taking instead of giving life. If you wish not to talk about the previous question, what about technology and its ability to choose how a baby is going to look, maybe how it will act or how smart it is, or it can be used to help reduce some problems like the chance of down syndrome. In a sense we are still playing God.

  1. Yes, I do think that humans have a desire to "play God" in the sense that we want to be able to control creation.I think humans believe that if we have the ability to control creation, then we will have the ability to control life, and thus, death. I personally have no problem with assisted suicide. I think the important thing is that a person has control. With assisted suicide, a person can decide whether they want to die. Abortion, not so much. However, if you have the power to give life, you also have the power to take it away.I think morality is important concerning this topic because if we have this ability, then we also are able to decide who can live and who can die. Then we get into the question of is everyone worthy of living? Of course I believe the answer is yes, but not everyone may think so, and you may have a case of people using the increasingly advanced means to establish a more efficient form of eugenics.

  2. I don't think that humans ever intended to 'Play God' I just think that our technology has evolved so much that it seems that we try to 'Play Gog'. As far as "baby customization goes", i see how this may cause mixed views and heated debates between people but I feel that this can potentially be a good thing. With this type of technology, many of the worlds worst diseases can be suppressed if not cured all together. Another benefit to this can be the customization of blood type. With this, there will no longer be the need of different blood types. With a single blood type, blood transfusions can be a lot simpler and there will be a lot more blood to go around to people who need it. I don't know. I feel like people hear about these type of abstract and science fiction type ideas, they focus directly on the negative aspect of it and lose sight of the good that can come out of it. Let me put it this way. When the medical field first introduced the idea of organ transplants, people thought of how this will corrupt people and cause problems. Now, organ transplants are taken lightly and happen quite commonly. What if "baby customization" today is what organ transplants were 100 years ago?
Sorry if this was sort of off topic.
