Today in class we watch the first half of the first part of Star Trek. We talked about how it was supposed to portray the perfect civilization. In their perfect world, Captain Pike was stuck to a wheel chair and the only way he could communicate was through simple yes or no blinks represented through Morse Code. Morse Code was made in the 1840’s so one would think he should have been able to communicate in a more complete way. Another thing was that the women in the show had very insignificant roles. This could be related to the fact that the episode aired on TV November 17th, 1966, a time when women had insignificant roles in the American work force and political system. If so, then what do you think an ideal perfect world would look like with days molds? Not like there is a lot of time at tech, but I know there is a new Star Trek series called Star Trek: Enterprise that started in 2001. Does the society portrayed in that series fit better into what you think it should?

  1. I'm not really a Star Trek fan so I haven't seen any of the newer episodes but I have seen the movie. Based on the movie, I feel that women play a slightly more significant role but still not as significant as the males in the movie. Although the movie, being based of the original series, could be trying to keep some of the traditions of the show intact. Also in Star Trek the movie, The most elite of humans were chosen to be part of the Enterprise. These people, one would think, would be the best candidates for the 'ideal society' but I believe that this goal isn't reached. But what exactly constitutes an 'ideal society'? May there be no such thing as an ideal society? Nothing is perfect.

  2. Like Corey, I don't really have a lot of experience with Star Trek, so I don't know. I do know that the ideal society would be one in which women would have a more significant role, but then again, utopia doesn't exist.I'm not quite sure that any society modeled after Star Trek would be ideal.

  3. I am the same as both Corey and Bethaney the only parts of Star Trek I have seen is the new movie. In this movie the women do have some higher rankings if I remember correctly I think the pilot was a women, but I could be mistaken. I personally don't think Star Trek portrays a perfect world or ideal.
